Frankie and Johnny

by On Stage Uxbridge

7:30pm

The setting is a walk-up apartment on Manhattan’s West Side where, as the curtain rises, Frankie (a waitress) and Johnny (a short-order cook who works in the same restaurant) are discovered in bed. It is their first encounter, after having met several weeks ago on the job, and Frankie is hopeful that Johnny will now put on his clothes and depart, so she can return to her usual routine of watching TV and eating ice cream. But Johnny, a compulsive talker (and romantic), has other ideas. He is convinced that he loves Frankie, a notion that she, at first, considers to be ridiculous. She has had more disappointments than delights in life, and he is the veteran of one broken marriage already. And neither of them is in the bloom of youth. Yet out of their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay the promise of a relationship beyond a “one-night stand” does begin to emerge and, as the lights dim, the two are back in bed again, but this time side-by-side, holding hands before the glowing television screen.

Appropriate for 16 years of age and older. Contains adult situations and some nudity.

Run time approx 2hrs

All tickets are: $25.00 each and include all taxes, ticket fees and Music Hall Improvement Fund.

Group rate of 10 or more tickets purchased for a single performance in a single transaction: $22.00 per ticket.

About your host:
From time to time, John Allen is seen backed into a corner sketching at the Wedge. He's an avid sketchbook keeper always having several going at any one time. He sees it akin to an artist's physical training program.
Designing for TV/film & new media demanded him to swap his pens for a mouse, and despite his passion for staying current with the latest digital tools, he maintains the practice of hand sketching for a variety of reasons, not least for the pure joy of it.

JITENSHA
Yes, it's Thanksgiving Sunday. But it's JITENSHA! So here's what you do: 1) Insist that you're hosting Thanksgiving this year. 2) Surprise your guests with an invigorating fall hike to the brewery at 3 pm. 3) Enjoy a fab show, have a few drinks. 4) Hike back home in time for dinner.
Jitensha is the garage rock love child of Erin Rose Hubbard and David Martinez.
From their bio:
David and Erin Rose (Rosey for short) met at an open mic in the summer of 2012, at an open mic at Benny’s Bagels on Broadway in Vancouver. They immediately hit it off and started playing music together a few weeks later. They played in the 5 piece indie rock band The Cattails for about a year before deciding to go out on their own and formed Jitensha. One long dark and rainy winter later, armed with their first album Buck Moon, the pair took flight from Vancouver for their first adventure.
That summer they traveled the whole perimeter of the US, living in their Toyota Sienna and playing at every open mic they could find. They grew closer as music continued to bond them together.
They eventually landed in Montréal, and began their life as “métro rats” performing often in the eclectic subways. That summer they threw their hat into the sunny streets, singing oldies covers in the old port of Montréal - but it wasn’t long before they were on the road again.
In autumn 2015 David and Rose called a big black school bus home while touring Eastern Canada as part of a post secondary motivational presentation with Hamilton, ON based non-profit Live Different. They survived gale force winds in Newfoundland, the bus falling into a ditch in Cape Breton, and a devastating house fire in P.E.I. It was an eventful, breathtaking trip that filled them with further musical inspiration.
Back in the cold métro the next spring, Jitensha was discovered by a cruise ship booking agent. 2 months later, the pair made their way to Brisbane, Australia to begin their new life as a lounge duo aboard P&O Australia’s Pacific Dawn. They would end up doing 3 contracts with P&O, traveling much of the South Pacific and making countless friends and connections.
They couldn’t wait to get back to their chosen home in Montréal and in early 2018 finally set to work on their second album. They took a break that summer to tie the knot in Colorado before heading back north.
2019 saw the duo pick up steam as they started to tour in Ontario and Québec. They released their second album Periscope that summer and celebrated with a 32 date cross Canada Tour. They’re currently back in Montréal full of inspiration and ready to create again.
In 2020 their first US tour was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They were bummed but used the free time to write many songs, livestream and explore the beautiful province of Québec.
In 2021 Jitensha released two new singles “Sojourn” and “Diwa.” They attended Canadian Music Week for the first time.
2022 saw two new singles, “Psychotic (What Are Friends For)” and “Cou Cou” was released September 23rd, 2022. They completed their first US tour July - September and made many new friends along the way! The pair then took 6 months off music to learn to surf and volunteer on organic farms in Japan.
In 2023 they are celebrating 10 years of writing music together. Their latest acoustic EP “Vol. 3” was released March 31st followed by a 6 month US tour.

The Brickworks Book Launch with Lucy E.M. Black

Blue Heron Studio

October 14 | 2023 - 3:00 pm

TICKETS: FREE- Pre registration required

We are thrilled to be hosting the wonderful Lucy E.M. Black as she launches her third novel, The Brickworks in Blue Heron Studio.

Join us for a reading at 3:30 pm as Lucy is joined by our host and interviewer Rachel McMillan. Following her interview Lucy will be hosting a draw and book signing. Be sure to arrive at 3:00 pm to enjoy all this event has to offer!

When the Tay Bridge collapsed in 1879 it killed everyone on the train that was crossing, leaving the son of the driver, young Brodie Smith, traumatized and reduced to poverty as a result of his father’s death. Leaving home determined to make his way in the world, Brodie finds safe haven with his kindly uncle in Edinburgh and studies engineering, intent on demonstrating that the bridge disaster was not his father’s fault. In search of adventure and further opportunities, Brodie then travels to Buffalo where he befriends Alistair, another young Scot filled with dreams and ambitions. Together the men bring industrialization to a small rural community where they establish a brickworks, changing the lives of all those they encounter with a sense of possibility and the reality of attendant loss. Told in beautifully crafted prose, it is Black’s incomparable voice–her uncanny humour and an astonishing ear for dialogue–that renders The Brickworks both remarkable and unforgettable.

Lucy E.M. Black is the author of the short story collection The Marzipan Fruit Basket, the historical fiction novel Eleanor Courtown, and most recently Stella’s Carpet. Her award-winning short stories have been published in Britain, Ireland, USA and Canada in literary journals and magazines including Cyphers Magazine, the Hawai’i Review, The Antigonish Review and others. A dynamic workshop presenter, experienced interviewer and freelance writer, Lucy lives with her partner in Port Perry, Ontario.

Rachel McMillan is the author of The London RestorationThe Mozart Code, the Herringford and Watts mysteries, the Van Buren and DeLuca mysteries, and the Three Quarter Time series of contemporary Viennese romances. She is also the author of Dream, Plan, Go: A Travel Guide to Inspire Independent Adventure. Rachel lives in Toronto, Canada.

Jeff Haynes
Saturday afternoon with Jeff Haynes!
Jeff Haynes has been playing guitar since his days as a Scarborough youth. A long-time session player, Jeff has migrated throughout the years to different bands, collaborations, and jam scenes within the orbit of northeast Toronto. Generally though, his sound on guitar remains consistent: bright, rhythmic, and bluesy, and carries with it a soulful attention to detail.
As a seasoned player Jeff has more recently taken to acoustic rock & roll covers, and in the last few years has begun to do more singing/song writing on his solo work project.
In Jeffs own words: Music is a direct link to our soul. Where words fall short, song can strike those ineffable chords of feeling that resonate within us all.

TICKETS: $125.00 plus HST

Everyone has a story to tell.  What’s yours?

Join us for an immersive workshop as we delve into the world of memoir writing with award winning author, Donna Morrissey.

In this hands-on class, you will learn two types of short memoir: the personal essay and the personal narrative. Find your story by determining what qualifies as a memoir and which type works best for you. From here we will discuss how to write your truth without hurting the people in your life.

With Donna’s expertise you will discover the heart of your story and how to strengthen it further. No writing experience is necessary but we encourage you to think big, write small and come prepared to discuss your story.

DONNA MORRISSEY is the author of the nationally bestselling memoir Pluck, which was a finalist for the Atlantic Book Awards’ Non-Fiction Award, and of six acclaimed and bestselling novels. Among her honours are the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award and the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Fiction for The Fortunate Brother; Sylvanus Now was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize; and The Deception of Livvy Higgs was a One Read pick for Nova Scotia in 2017. Combining elements of various 3-finger and downpicking styles, Sean calls on a wide range of influences from ragtime to bluegrass, jazz, and country blues to form a unique and original approach to songwriting on the 5-string banjo.
A classically trained singer, Sean’s resonant baritone echoes stories projecting from parallel universes, the far reaches of the void, and from deep within the collective human psyche.

Brent Butt in Conversation with Neil Crone

Uxbridge Music Hall

October 17 | 2023 - 7:00 pm

TICKETS: $60.00 plus HST - Book Included

Little Mosque on the Prairie takes on Corner Gas for an evening that’s guaranteed to entertain.  Join us as hometown favourite and funnyman Neil Crone interviews Best Male Stand-Up in Canada, Brent Butt at the fine old Uxbridge Music Hall.

Your $60 ticket includes a copy of Huge.

Brent Butt has long been considered one of the funniest people in Canada, with a career in stand-up comedy that stretches into five decades, including numerous appearances at major festivals in multiple countries and being voted Best Male Stand-Up in Canada by his peers in the profession.

BRENT BUTT has made his home in Vancouver for thirty years, but was born and raised in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. After high school he worked as a drywaller, salesperson, comic book artist, and darkroom technician before deciding to pursue his real dream, and in February of 1988, Butt performed stand-up comedy for the first time on an amateur night at a Saskatoon comedy club.  He is now considered one of the funniest people in Canada, with a career in stand-up comedy that stretches into five decades. He also created and starred in two successful sitcoms – CORNER GAS (“Funniest Show on TV” as voted by TV Guide Readers, currently in 60 countries) and HICCUPS (multiple Leo and Writers Guild Awards). When you add in two theatrical comedy films (NO CLUE, CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE) and four seasons of an animated TV spinoff, it may seem surprising that Brent’s new venture has taken a rather dark turn.

Brent has written his debut novel – an intense, gritty psychological thriller called HUGEThe story follows three comedians on a rough run of shows through a remote stretch of rural countryside, as their priorities shift from getting laughs to fighting for their lives.

Brent will be interviewed by Neil Crone – Canadian actor, voice artist, comedian, writer, and motivational speaker.

A veteran of the world-famous Second City comedy troupe, Neil Crone has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, cartoons, and commercials. He is probably best known however for portraying Fred Tupper in Little Mosque on the Prairie and Jerry Whitehall in Cube 2: Hypercube, but is also recognized for appearances in such works as New York MinuteHollywoodlandIt (2017)American Psycho 2: All American GirlMurdoch MysteriesEndlings, and The Red Green Show.

Bry Webb + Cots with Ben Reines

at The Second Wedge Co.

7:30pm – 10:00pm

General Admission. $15 advance purchase (see link), $20 at the door.

An evening of live music with Bry Webb (of the Constantines) and COTS (Steph Yates), with guest opener Ben Reines (Cobra Coyote)!
In 2017, our then-beertender Dan (Ben Reines) let us know his hero Bry Webb was looking for small Ontario venues to play, and we jumped at the recommendation. We then experienced one of the most intimate and engaging shows we've ever had at the Wedge.
About five years ago Bry Webb stopped playing and releasing music entirely, sold instruments and recording equipment, and convinced himself that he was done.
In early 2023 his personal life exploded. In the process of dealing with that, he started writing music again and started recording at home. His therapist said he needed to figure out how to ask for, and accept, help from other people. He sent early recordings of songs to friends made through twenty-five years of music making - many folks he hadn’t connected with in years - and asked if they’d contribute anything to the songs. People came through in ways that overwhelmed him. He felt incredibly cared for.
Now, Webb has started performing live again, with shows as far flung as Guelph, Calgary, Montreal and Dawson City. He will be performing some old songs, and some new for the first time, in advance of a new album, coming November 2023.
The album, and these performances, are all about death, transition, asking for help and looking for hope.
“…he looks at things from a perspective that sheds a deeper light… It’s more poetry than play-by-play, but at the same time, he’s telling us really evident stories. And it all culminates into something you feel more than think about, which is a feat… His voice has an authority to it and I’ve always believed that he believes in what he’s singing.” – Feist
“Bry Webb asks you what you are connected to and what you have been connected to… Everyone at the bonfire threw in their ringing cell phones, animals chilled the f*#k out, and we all feel lucky to have him so close on this.” – Chad VanGaalen
COTS is the solo project of Montreal composer, singer, and guitarist Steph Yates. Blending elements of bossa nova, folk, jazz, and classical against a modern art backdrop, Yates’s crystalline voice carries the gravitas of songs that evoke lost love and its consequences.
This is a ticketed event. 19+.

A Super Wicked Book Launch with Doug Knight

Blue Heron Studio

October 21 | 2023 - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

TICKETS: FREE | Pre-registration not required

Join us October 21 in Blue Heron Studio as we celebrate the launch of Doug Knight’s Super Wicked White Cell Squadron series!

In 1994, when he was 6 years old, Doug was diagnosed with a Hypothalamic Low-grade Glioma (brain tumour).  The damage left in the wake of the tumour would affect his sight, leaving him with a visual range of 8/400 under the classification of legally blind.  Although his dreams of being a fighter pilot were put on hold, he was luckily given the power of the mighty PENCIL! His pursuit of excellence in the field of visual arts would have him pursue a career in the tattoo industry and later creating his indie-comic publication Cross Eye Comics.

Let’s take a second here folks.  Put away the tiny violins and break out the war drums.  What we have here is not a sad tale but an epic adventure!  Doug has worked with some incredible individuals in the tattoo industry and fine art community and has been privileged to marry his best friend and father two of the sweetest little trouble-makers you’ll ever get to meet!

“I spent a lot of time doing two things while I was in the hospital as a child: being bored and being sick! The sick part didn’t stop until I was out of treatment. The bored part, however, I kicked its butt the MINUTE I picked up a pencil for the first time! Much of my influences came from the cartoons I was watching on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You know, when you actually HAD to WAIT for ONE episode of your favourite show to play! It should come as no surprise that I, like many others, love superheroes, giant robots, mega monsters, and epic stories! This brings us to SUPER WICKED WHITE CELL SQUADRON!

SUPER WICKED WHITE CELL SQUADRON is an inclusive and action-packed story. Every element of it is something special to me. The main characters’ names are all combinations of the doctors who made special impacts on me throughout my life. The “minions” are called WULLY GALOOBERS! That’s the name my mom gave the gunk that would form in the corner of my eyes as a child when I had allergy attacks… they were itchy, goopy, and gross. Wully Galoobers… and now they are pesky evil henchmen!”
